Over the past years A&S expanded into different states including New Jersey and Pennsylvania
1971 Woodbridge center
A first for New Jersey as the chain opened its first store at Woodbridge center mall with its pointy unique structure on the exterior it was a huge three floor store. The chains first effort in NJ was a success. In 1992, the store received a renovation inside in which there was a celebration in which the late NJ Nets star Drazen Petrovic signed autographs and 90210 star Gabrielle Carteris who played Andrea Zuckerman on the show. Sadly the store closed in 1995 after Macy’s phased out the A&S brand. The store was sold to Sears and opened that year and remained till 2020 and closed during the COVID pandemic it currently sits vacant.
Paramus 1974
The chains second NJ store. this time up North Jersey at the brand new Paramus Park Mall. This store was rebranded to Macy’s in 1995 and is still open to this day on A&S drive yes there’s a street going into the mall off of 17 called that even though Macys is there now.
Eatontown 1978
The third NJ location opened near the jersey shore at Monmouth Mall I highly visited this store more than anything. In 1995, it turned into a Stern’s till they closed in 2001. Boscov’s currently is in the spot even though the mall is gone and turning into mixed retail and living.
Short Hills 1981
The final NJ store for the chain opened at the upscale Mall at Short Hills it remains a Macys to this day. Years later, a fifth could have been in Freehold by then it was too late Macy's phased the A&S brand in 1995.
King of Prussia 1981
The first in the chains first store in the Keystone state as it opened at the new Court section of the large King of Prussia Mall. Actress Carol Channing cut the ribbon at a ceremony this store only lasted till 1988 when Strawbridge's or Strawbridge and Clothier took over
Willow Grove 1982
The companies second Pennsylvania store in Willow Grove park a newly opened mall sadly another that didn’t last in the Philadelphia region gone by 1987 and also replaced by Strawbridge's nice try trying to enter a different market with John Wanamaker and Strawbridge's taking reign. they couldn't cut the mustard in the Philly suburbs.
Manhattan 1989
Opening a block from Macy’s Herald square, the large A&S plaza opened inside what used to be Gimbels that closed two years beforehand. In 1995 Stern’s took over and renamed Manhattan Mall it then housed JC Penny after Stern’s closed in 2001, but downsized to two floors this location was deemed as a failure the logistics were off but on the bright side easy access to the NYC Subway and Path train to head back to NJ. It would have been simple just to open a actual store minus the mall.
Roosevelt Field 1992
The chains store opening in Long Island at the legendary Roosevelt field mall. Cosby show star Tempsett Bledsoe and NY jets players Browning Nagle, Rob Moore and Al Toon all ushered in the new store. the stores interior was amazing and still like that today with Bloomingdale’s which replaced it in 1995
