Deptford Mall South Jersey's second most successful mall

Deptford Mall has been a pretty successful mall in the South Jersey region besides Cherry Hill Mall which I covered on a busy post Thanksgiving weekend on Black Friday. What is it that makes this mall so successful? Lets go over the history of the Mall.

The mall opened in 1975 as Gloucester County's lone shopping center off rt 55 and near Philadelphia with John Wanamaker, Sears and Bamberger's. JC Penny was added in 2001. The anchor changes that happened was Bamberger's converting to Macy's in 1986. Wanamaker's closed a decade later in 1995 and converted to Hecht's which was very short lived and then Became Strawbridge's in 1996 and lasted a good 10 years till 2006 as the brand disappeared after Macy's merger with May Department Stores in which all of Philadelphia's legendary chains vanished for good with Macy's growing throughout the country. Boscov's would move in later that year in what was the old Wanamaker's . A food court was added at the end of the 1980's. Sears closed in 2019 and was replaced with Round 1 entertainment on the upper level and Dick's sporting goods on the lower level. The mall is owned currently by Macerich which also owns the successful Freehold Raceway Mall a hour and some change up north.
