The stores that started out in NJ
I been a jersey resident all my life and have been in these stores as a kid but they are no more. A trip down memory lane with these stores.
Bamberger's the legendary store and its flagship on Market Street in Newark is still standing to this day despite its partner Macy's closed up shop there over 30 years ago as Macy's rebranded the Bamberger's chain in 1986 as it was part of Macy's phase of rebranding regional chains of course in the 1990's they rebranded A&S and Stern's in the early 2000's
Hahne's another Newark based chain was not too far away from Bamberger's as its flagship sat on Broad and Washington Streets. The chain lasted until the late 1980's as most of the store's turned into Lord and Taylor except for Garden State Plaza which opened the first Seattle based Nordstrom which has expanded all over the US. The old flagship was restored a few years back into retail and living space called Hahne & Co
Steinbach's based out of Asbury Park had its flagship on Cookman Avenue which closed in the mid 70's as it moved to nearby Ocean and the new Seaview Square Mall. Steinbach had stores all over Nj from Egg Harbor to Paramus some new ones opened as Ohrbach's closed in the mid 1980's as Woodbridge, Willowbrook, Bergen Mall and Queens Center took over until the chains demise in the mid 1990's Some converted to The Bon Ton, Value City and Woodbridge and Willowbrook getting Lord and Taylor's
Two Guys or Two Guys from Harrison. Well before Bradlees, Caldor, Jamesway and later on Target and Walmart, it was Two Guys .I remember my mom taking me to the store in Manalapan as a kid I'm sure most of my toys and kiddie books came from there they reigned for decades until the early 1980's where things went bad the chain went out of business and most of the stores turned into Bradlees
