King of Prussia this mall needs its own zip code its so huge

KoP King of Prussia this mall is massive and one of the largest in the United States along with Garden State Plaza in Paramus, Destiny USA in Syracuse, NY, Roosevelt Field on Long Island, American Dream in the NJ Meadowlands and Mall of America in Minnesota but lets rewind and see why and how it got so big

The Plaza

KoP opened in 1962 as the mall is in two parts. The plaza and the court the court came along in the early 1980's. The plaza which started out as an open air shopping center. with a E.J. Korvette's and Acme Supermarket. Also JC Penny opened in 1963 and a Woolworth's  Also a John Wanamaker's opened in 1965 and Gimbel's Philadelphia division in 1966. By the 1970's, the plaza started to be enclosed but was still open air somewhat. Korvette's would close in 1980 and was demolished for a food court. Sears would open in the plaza in 1983. Gimbel's would convert into Stern's in 1986 and lasted till 1992 and was replaced with JC Penny which moved from its original store that opened almost 3 decades ago. The plaza also received 3 new anchors in the 1990's which was Neiman Marcus, Lord and Taylor and Nordstrom between 1995 and 96. Lord and Taylor would close in 2020 after going out of business during the COVID 19 pandemic and is currently the Netflix House, A interactive entertainment spot that Netflix is doing. Wanamaker's went out of business in 1995 and Hecht's came in and out quickly and a second Strawbridge's came in and replaced by another Macy's for a brief time in 2006 wow, A mall with 2 Macy's is crazy even 2 Strawbridge's was insane. The old Wanamaker's store was demolished and replaced with Eataly, A italian eatery and market. Sears closed in 2014 while part of that store is part Dick's Sporting goods and Primark. Between the 1990's to the 2010's, the mall has received large renovations with a access bridge to the court without jumping in the car heading to the other side or vice versa. Dick's will be opening their House of Sport Concept in the old JC Penny building. Also a large Dave and Buster will be opening in the Plaza.

The Court

The court part of the mall started in 1981 as Bamberger's opened first in March of that year by the summer of 81, Bloomingdale's and A&S opened. The A&S was the first Pennsylvania store outside of the NYC/NJ region besides Willow Grove Park a year later to open in a new surrounding. On August 6,1981, actress Carol Channing participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony and signed autographs to usher in their NY effort into the Keystone state. By the mid 1980's the court would have 2 anchor changes in which Bamberger's converted to Macy's in 1986 and A&S closed in 1988 leaving the Philly region for good and converted to Philadelphia's well established chain Strawbridge and Clothier in 1988 which lasted until 1999. After Strawbridge's closed well before the Macy’s aquisition of May dept stores in 2006, Another Strawbridge's opened in the Wanamaker store over in the Plaza section in the mid 1990's.How strange is it to have 2 of the same chain in a mall?? The A&S building was gutted out, expanded to a part of the mall called the Pavilion. More malls should be doing that is they want to survive.

A model of the A&S KoP store which converted to Strawbridge's in the late 1980's and is now part of the mall after Strawbridge's closed at the Court section called the Pavillion. Smart move more malls should be doing that once they can't get a new anchor to fill in gut it out and turn it into part of the mall.
